NATIONAL INTERN DAY

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: TALIA GREEN

MJ exists to inspire the success, fulfillment and wellbeing of each person we serve: our associates and their families, business partners, clients and our community. One particularly exciting way we see this play out is through our Internship Program. In honor of National Intern Day (July 28th), we’re featuring stories from former MJ interns who transitioned to full-time associates and have found success, fulfillment and happiness in part by their experience here at MJ.

Talia Green’s journey to MJ came about organically. It was at an event in 2018 at her alma mater, Butler University, where she heard Jon Loftin—MJ’s President + COO—speak about the promising potential of a career in the insurance industry and the need for inquisitive, analytical minds. It was one of those “right place, right time” situations as Talia had the opportunity to connect with Jon at that event on campus. As a statistics and actuarial science major, her interest piqued as Jon shared about the exciting developments in analytics in the insurance world and at MJ. Little did she know, this interaction would lead her to a summer internship the following year as an analytics intern.

Talia joined the MJ team as an analytics intern in 2019 which was an exciting time of innovation and development for MJ’s analytics capabilities. Much of her work involved collaborating with the Risk Management + Commercial Insurance teams to gather, analyze and discover methods for using data. Talia loved the chance to put the pieces of the puzzle together and enjoyed the freedom to choose which projects she could focus on to help improve the analytics capabilities at MJ.

For Talia, one project she is especially proud of is a report she created while working with MJ’s Risk Services department. She developed this report and it is one that is still used regularly today at MJ. “It feels good to look back on something I had a part in, even as an intern. I loved that I was able to jump into the work MJ was already doing and make a real contribution,” says Talia.

Talia says the people at MJ made the biggest impression on her. “I remember having a lot of lunch meetings with other employees. I could tell that people really wanted to get to know me as a person, that they cared about me. And I remember thinking that this is exactly the kind of place I want to work, and these are the kind of people I want to be around.”

After Talia graduated from Butler University, she was thrilled to have the opportunity to join MJ as a full-time data analyst. “Since I was an intern and had been working on a lot of projects, the transition to becoming full-time was pretty smooth,” Talia explains. Working on big-picture projects like captive programs and its relation to business consulting is one of her favorite parts of her role on the analytics team.

What we love about Talia’s story is not only her determination and curiosity, but also her experience with MJ’s culture. She describes MJ as a unique workplace where people genuinely care for one another and go out of their way to help each other. “When I first started, I had tons of questions, and every person I interacted with was so helpful, kind and willing to help me succeed.”

If Talia were to give any advice to a current or prospective MJ intern, she would encourages them to take advantage of every opportunity to learn. “Many internships include a lot of busy work,” explains Talia, “but at MJ, as an intern, you get to be a part of the real work, to be a part of the team. There’s so much to learn, so take advantage of every chance you get to learn more, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

We’re so proud of Talia and her journey at MJ! Stay tuned for another feature on an MJ intern turned full-time associate on MJ Insight tomorrow.
