If you’ve limited responsibility for cyber security to the IT department, your organization could be at substantial risk of a breech.
The theme of this year’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, is “Do Your Part. #BeCyberSmart,” and that theme was chosen specifically to highlight the role every member of your team plays in proactive cyber safety. One of the month’s key messages is “If you connect it, protect it.”
There are some important ways to safeguard not only your company’s data, but also the private information of your employees and customers. In a previous blog, we emphasized the need for adequate cyber liability insurance. But there are some great ways to prevent cyberattacks from occurring in the first place too.
- First and foremost is establishing policies that raise the bar of expectations. This requires clear guidelines on how and where employees can use both company-owned and personal devices. If you allow remote work, this is important to factor in as well. While it can seem tedious to write all these policies, they provide important clarity for your entire team.
- Equally vital is employee education. While we’d like to think everyone is cyber-aware, the reality is that anyone call let their guard down. Cyber criminals have become remarkably adept at creating realistic traps, and phishing attacks now account for more than 80 percent of reported security incidents.
- Adding smart software is another terrific way to prevent hackers from infiltrating your systems in the first place. MJ’s team of cyber experts can recommend some of the best options out there for spam filters, firewalls and anti-virus and malware programs, as well as how to set up secure networks.
We’ve got more tips to come, so be sure to check out our upcoming cybersecurity blog to round out the series. And as always, contact the MJ team with any questions or concerns.
