Britni Shrout smiles during meeting

I arrived at MJ disillusioned, with little confidence that I’d ever find a job that inspired, challenged and rewarded me both professionally and personally. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong.

MJ has a publicly stated Purpose: To inspire the success, fulfillment and wellbeing of each person we serve: our associates and their families, our clients, partners and our community. If I read that before my first day, I don’t remember it. And if I did, I’m sure I didn’t believe it. After all, so many companies have a declared purpose, mission, vision or values. Too few follow through on them.

At MJ, things are different. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Well done is better than well said.” Our Purpose is not just a collection of words written to make us sound good. It actually drives what we do. There is an energy here; a commitment to others that is palpable.

I truly love what I do. I’m a valued member of the team, and the role of marketing and communications – which is too frequently overlooked or minimized within the industry – is factored into strategic decisions. At MJ, I have a seat at the table, and that has changed everything.

So, this holiday season, I’m especially grateful for my job because it continues to inspire me. I’ve tried to adopt a similar purpose in my life outside of work. This past year, my husband and I joined Big Brothers Big Sisters, and it’s been a transformative experience, certainly for us and hopefully for our Littles as well. And I’m looking forward to more positive experiences in 2020, knowing that MJ has my back, believing that I have the power to create change.

I wish the same kind of new year for you as well. What inspires you? I’d love to hear about your ideas and experiences… it’s a great way to encourage us all to do even more.
