MJ Insurance Adds VP of Learning & Development

Forward-thinking move to help employee development and recruitment

INDIANAPOLIS – (March 1, 2016)MJ Insurance, one of the nation’s largest privately-held insurance agencies with more than five decades of success, is adding an executive to lead its professional learning and development efforts to help retain and attract employee talent.

Joining MJ in the newly-created role of Vice President of Learning & Development is Ryan Michalowski, a seasoned HR professional with significant talent and leadership experience. In addition to the establishment of MJ’s Learning and Development Department, Michalowski will be responsible for strategic oversight of all human resource functions at the Indianapolis-based agency.

“We’re pleased to add Ryan to the MJ team where he will lead our efforts to develop specific training tracks for each position at MJ, existing and new,” Loftin said. “The insurance industry is facing a tremendous talent shortage over the coming years as more people retire from the industry than we are currently replacing. Ryan will add great value to our commitment to have the best team assisting our clients.”

Most recently, Michalowski was vice president of human resources at DEFENDERS, responsible for the development and implementation of talent acquisition, retention, employee relations, benefits and compensation. Previously, Michalowski held a variety of positions managing corporate training and performance management. Michalowski earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University.

“I’m excited to join MJ Insurance, well-known for its rich employee cultural investments and an agency regarded for developing its people to thrive not only in today’s marketplace, but in a much different environment that we all know is coming,” said Michalowski. “I’m proud to be a part of nurturing our existing talent base and to help build the next generation of leaders at MJ Insurance.”

According to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor, the insurance industry will need to replace more than 300,000 jobs by the year 2022. The addition of Michalowski is not the only investment MJ is taking to enrich and fuel its talent pool. Last year, in partnership with the Butler University College of Business, MJ established a student-run insurance company with the university.

“The addition of Ryan helps MJ combat an ongoing challenge that we have to keep our talent pool deep enough to fulfill ongoing needs,” added Loftin. “It’s an issue the entire industry is dealing with and one in which we are proactively addressing.”
